Safe Internet Use by Children
Our Work
Safe online | A child protection model
In Kenya’s urban centers, AICS is piloting a bold child protection model called “Safe Online,” developed in partnership with local and international allies. In Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nakuru, where digital access is growing rapidly, children are often the most unprotected internet users—navigating unfiltered platforms without adult guidance. Recognizing this growing risk, AICS is working alongside communities to pioneer practical, scalable approaches to online child safety.
This initiative builds on a year-long case study that positioned schools, homes, and child protection systems as frontline defenses. Children participated in interactive digital safety sessions, while parents and caregivers were brought together in structured forums to explore how to guide, monitor, and respond to online threats. Simultaneously, local law enforcement, social workers, and child helplines began working in coordinated response networks—establishing a foundation for real-time support when digital harm occurs.
Initial findings were encouraging. Over 2,200 children and 600 caregivers engaged directly. Our media campaigns reached over 800,000 Kenyans, prompting a 70 percent increase in digital risk awareness and a 40 percent drop in sextortion cases in targeted neighborhoods.
Lessons from these urban pilots are now informing regional expansion into Francophone West Africa, Southern Africa, and rural Kenya—ensuring Africa’s children can surf, scroll, and learn safely.
