Hon Lady Justice Martha Koome, AICS Children Champion
The AICS fraternity are privileged to be associated with Hon Lady Justice Martha Koome as the Children Champion.
She is a highly respected Judge of the Appeal Court in Kenya since First Appointment on May 22, 2003.
Hon Lady Justice Martha Koome obtained her Bachelors Degree in Law from the University of Nairobi in 1986 and was admitted to the Bar in 1987. Prior to joining the judiciary arm she was in private practice and was also a renowned advocate for gender equality and the protection of women’s rights. She served as the Chairperson of the Federation of Kenyan Women Lawyers (FIDA) and was in charge of policy formulation and maintaining liaison with other NGOs and donors.
She was previously based in the family division of the High Court in Nakuru, Kenya where she deals with probate and administration matters, divorce, maintenance and custody of children. She was instrumental in initiating the Juvenile Justice Programme that provides legal aid to minors.
She was the 3rd Vice-Chairperson of African Committee of Experts on the Right and Welfare of the Child (2005-2010).
Her role as AICS Children Champion include:
1. Raising profile of children issues that need redress by regional bodies, continental organizations and governments.
2. Advocate for implementation of good practices and evidence based interventions identified by AICS.
3. Help publicize advocacy campaigns on various issues affecting children.
4. Link AICS to other regional and international institutions to enhance networking.
